Longtime AAU volunteer passes

10/02/2020

Eddie Clinton was a coach, volunteer, and national AAU staff member for many years

The Amateur Athletic Union is sad to announce the passing of longtime AAU volunteer Edward 'Eddie' Clinton.

A native of Oxford, Mississippi, Eddie developed and coached the Memphis Lady Celtic Basketball teams for many years. As head of the powerhouse program, he coached his teams to four AAU National Championships and many more runner-up trophies before moving to Orlando in 1996 to lead the AAU Girls’ Basketball program as a national AAU staff member. After his retirement in 2012, Eddie returned to the Memphis area. During his nearly 40 years involved in the AAU, he was active at the local level in the Southeastern and Southern AAU Districts as well as the national level serving for committees including Girls Basketball, Golf, Legislation, Insurance and Volunteer Hall of Fame.

As a leader in the AAU, Eddie received multiple AAU President’s National Leadership Awards and was recognized in 2018 with the 35-year service gold pin. Eddie’s impact of the sport of girls’ basketball extended beyond the AAU, including serving on the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame Board of Directors.

A long-time colleague and friend to many in the AAU, Eddie Clinton passed away the morning of October 2, 2020 -- on his birthday.
