RECAP: 54th AAU Junior Olympic Games - Week 1

The first week of the 54th AAU Junior Olympic Games - Space Coast has wrapped up its competition. Seven events have crowned their champions, with much more excitement to come in Week 2.

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – The 2020 AAU Junior Olympic Games kicked off with both feet on the water as this year’s event started off with AAU’s first ever Stand Up Paddle Board race. The Games have now seen through their first week of competition, and many young athletes have been crowned AAU Junior Olympic Games Champions.
 
On June 11, 2020 the Amateur Athletic Union announced the Florida’s Space Coast as the host of the 2020 Games, the AAU and Sunshine State Games teamed up to bring new and exciting events in addition to AAU’s longtime favorites, such as swimming, basketball and track and field.
 
The 2020 AAU Junior Olympic Games are a collaboration between the AAU, Space Coast Office of Tourism, Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida Sports Foundation, School Board of Brevard County, Brevard County Board of County Commissioners, and the Sunshine State Games to provide participation athletic opportunities to a diverse athlete and coach demographic. Strict safety precautions were implemented, as well as comprehensive social distancing and face mask requirements to ensure the health and safety of all of our participants.
 
The Stand Up Paddle Board Competition took place at Paddling Paradise on Wednesday, July 26, with three different age divisions per gender- 19 and under, 20 and over, and a 20+ Open. The 28 competitors raced through a short course on Turkey Creek, which provided smooth waters but added some pretty tough turns. Campbell Carter from North Carolina paddled a 3:20 and 3:25 wave time to clench the gold medal for the Men’s 15-19 class, and Pippa Hilton-Green from Florida finished with a 4:37 and 4:35 time to become the Women’s 15-19 Champion.
 
Beach Volleyball made a return to the AAU Junior Olympic Games this year, sporting four age divisions- 12u, 14u, 16u and 18u. 118 teams took to the sand on Cocoa Beach over a 6-day period. Teams played pool play for several rounds before being seeded into a single elimination bracket. The Georgia twins Bella Ferary and Angelina Ferary battled their way to a 28-19 win over Raelyn White and Arianna Bergner for the 18U AAU Junior Olympic Games Champion. Olga Nikolaeva and Thais Treumann went neck and neck against the team of Rylee Woods and Natalie Lorenzo, 28-21, for the title of 12U Champion.
 
The second and third wave of Beach Volleyball saw girls from 14 to 16 years old on the court. The 14s went first in a two-day competition that left Katherine Morley and Erin Inskeep at the top of the bracket after a 28-22 rout over Vivian Johnson and Audrey Jackson. Morley and Inskeep took to the sand a second time, playing up in the 15u division and once again walked away with the gold hardware. In the 16u division, Texan natives Liv Johnson and Mabyn Thomas won the gold with a 21-17 win over Madison Morrow and Klaire Vandeusen.
 
Seven teams met on the pool deck as the swimming got under way on Thursday, August 30. The three-day swim meet featured age divisions eight years old and under to 15 years old and over. The competition was fast paced as the short course competition was only 25 meters in length. 172 elite swimmers out of 212 participants walked away crowned AAU Junior Olympic Games Champions.
 
On Friday, July 31, AAU Basketball and Sunshine State Games began their Middle and High School Showcase, which fielded 44 teams from 6th to 11th grade. The games were held in six different schools around the Brevard County area. For the 6th grade division, the Tri-City Ballers dominated the competition winning by 20 points or more and became 6th grade champions. In the 8th grade division, Team Parsons CP25 2025 and Athletes of Influence battled it out through a tough four quarters, but the Athletes of Influences hang on to a 59-54 victory, crowning them as the 8th grade champions. Advanced Athletic A2-Brown took a 55-37 win over SCS Williams for the 15u/9th grade Championship, and 321 Sportscast became the 16u/10th grade Champions after a 61-52 win over Miami Dynasty Black. In the 17u/11th grade division, Q6 All-Stars Elite Anderson pulled away with a 55-50 victory over South Florida Elite. Lastly, for the Girls JV division East Coast United Premiere clenched the Championship title with a sweeping 67-34 win over Space Coast Fury.
