AAU Cares: Georgia AAU District Giving Back to Health Care Professionals

As the COVID-19 (“coronavirus”) situation continues to evolve and affect the lives of thousands across the globe, Liz Nichols, Georgia AAU District officer and AAU Gymnastics National Chair, decided to share what positivity she could and give back to her community. "I was really devastated after having to cancel our gymnastics national event. Amongst all the concerned phone calls and emails and all the uncertainty and unknown, I needed to refocus on what really matters at this time, and that is 'we are better together but apart at this time.'”

Nichols’ new mission was to help out where she could. She knew nurses, doctors and other health care professionals were working tireless hours to treat the influx of patients. Nichols began making masks and headbands with buttons to protect the sore ears of health care workers in her state, and when she ran out of cotton fabric, she turned to her old AAU shirts.

“I went to the t-shirt stockpile and used my AAU shirts to make a cotton filter for the masks,” said Nichols. “I also gave out my precious supply of elastic to use for the ties and bands for the masks. It all worked great.”
