Sports Stories with Denny Lennon: Week 3

11/01/2019

Our guest this week on Sports Stories with Denny Lennon is Rusty Buchanan, a former collegiate hurdler who hoped to represent Team USA at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, before the American-led boycott torpedoed the dreams of many athletes of that era.

THIS WEEK ON THE PODCAST

This week’s guest, Rusty Buchanan, has a fascinating story, as an athlete, along with accomplishments in the sports world, and working in sport tourism and sports administration. We caught up with the first Vice President of the Amateur Athletic Union during the AAU Leadership Conference, which was held September 25-28 at the Hyatt Regency in Orange County, CA.

(Among other stories, Rusty told us about realizing his Olympic dream, not on the track as he had wanted, but in a totally unexpected way!)

Rusty came close twice, in 1976 and 1980, to competing in the Olympic Games, but both times he ran into a hurdle. He would finally realize an Olympic Dream in 2010, and along the way create a lifetime of memories in his service of amateur sports.
